فَلَمَّا جَاءُوا قَالُوا لَهُ: «يَا مُعَلِّمُ، نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ صَادِقٌ وَلَا تُبَالِي بِأَحَدٍ، لِأَنَّكَ لَا تَنْظُرُ إِلَى وُجُوهِ ٱلنَّاسِ، بَلْ بِٱلْحَقِّ تُعَلِّمُ طَرِيقَ ٱللهِ. أَيَجُوزُ أَنْ تُعْطَى جِزْيَةٌ لِقَيْصَرَ أَمْ لَا؟ نُعْطِي أَمْ لَا نُعْطِي؟».
ایشان آمده، بدو گفتند: «ای استاد، ما را یقین است که تو راستگو هستی و از کسی باک نداری، چون که به ظاهر مردم نمی نگری بلکه طریق خدارا به راستی تعلیم مینمایی. جزیه دادن به قیصرجایز است یا نه؟ بدهیم یا ندهیم؟
