ויאמר שאול לנשא כליו שלף חרבך ודקרני בה פן יבואו הערלים האלה ודקרני והתעללו בי ולא אבה נשא כליו כי ירא מאד ויקח שאול את החרב ויפל עליה׃
فَقَالَ شَاوُلُ لِحَامِلِ سِلَاحِهِ: «ٱسْتَلَّ سَيْفَكَ وَٱطْعَنِّي بِهِ لِئَلَّا يَأْتِيَ هَؤُلَاءِ ٱلْغُلْفُ وَيَطْعَنُونِي وَيُقَبِّحُونِي». فَلَمْ يَشَأْ حَامِلُ سِلَاحِهِ لِأَنَّهُ خَافَ جِدًّا. فَأَخَذَ شَاوُلُ ٱلسَّيْفَ وَسَقَطَ عَلَيْهِ.
و شاول به سلاحدار خود گفت: «شمشیرخود را کشیده، آن را به من فرو بر مبادا این نامختونان آمده، مرا مجروح سازند و مرا افتضاح نمایند.» اما سلاحدارش نخواست زیرا که بسیاردر ترس بود. پس شاول شمشیر خود را گرفته، برآن افتاد.

Então disse Saul a seu escudeiro: Tira tua espada, e passa-me com ela, porque não venham estes incircuncisos, e me passem, e me escarneçam. Mas seu escudeiro não queria, porque tinha grande temor. Então Saul tomou a espada, e lançou-se sobre ela.
