ASV Byzantine Text
b The great king Artaxerxes unto the governors of countries in a hundred and seven and twenty provinces from India unto Ethiopia, and unto them that are well affected to our state, greeting. c Many, the more often they are honored with the great bounty of their benefactors, the more proud they are waxen, and endeavor to hurt not our subjects only, but not being able to bear abundance, do take in hand to practice also against those that do them good: d and take not only thankfulness away from among men, but also lifted up with the boastful words of them that were never good, they think to escape the evil-hating justice of God, who always seeth all things. e Oftentimes also fair speech of those that are put in trust to manage their friends’ affairs, hath caused many that are in authority to be partakers of innocent blood, and hath enwrapped them in remediless calamities: f beguiling with the false deceit of their lewd disposition the innocent good will of princes. g Now ye may see this, as we have declared, not so much by more ancient histories, as ye may, if ye search what hath been wickedly done of late through the pestilent behavior of them that are unworthily placed in authority. h And we must take care for the time to come, to render our kingdom quiet and peaceable for all men, i both by changing our purposes, and always judging things that come before our eyes with more equal proceeding. k For Haman, a Macedonian, the son of Hammedatha, an alien in truth from the Persian blood, and far distant from our goodness, being as a guest received of us, l had so far forth obtained the favor that we show toward every nation, as that he was called our father, and was continually honored of all men, as the next person unto the royal throne. m But he, not bearing his high estate, went about to deprive us of our kingdom and our life; n having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction, as well of Mordecai, who saved our life, and continually procured our good, as also of Esther the blameless partaker of our kingdom, together with their whole nation. o For by these means he thought, finding us destitute of friends, to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians. p But we find that the Jews, whom this most ungracious wretch hath delivered to utter destruction, are no evildoers, but live by most just laws: q and that they are children of the most high and most mighty living God, who hath ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitors in the most excellent manner. r Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Haman the son of Hammedatha. For he, that was the worker of these things, is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family: God, who ruleth all things, speedily rendering vengeance to him according to his deserts. s Therefore ye shall publish openly the copy of this letter in all places, and let the Jews live after their own laws, and ye shall aid them, that even the same day, being the thirteenth day of the twelfth month Adar, they may defend themselves against those who set upon them in the time of their affliction. t For Almighty God hath made this day to be a joy unto them, instead of the destruction of the chosen people. u And ye shall therefore among your commemorative feasts keep it a high day with all feasting: that both now and hereafter there may be safety to us, and the well affected Persians; but to those who do conspire against us a memorial of destruction. x Therefore every city or country whatsoever, which shall not do according to these things, shall be utterly destroyed without mercy with fire and sword; it shall be made not only unpassable for men, but also most hateful to wild beasts and fowls forever.

on one day in all the kingdom of Artaxerxes, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is Adar. a And the following is the copy of the letter of the orders. b [The great king Artaxerxes sends greeting to the rulers of provinces in a hundred and twenty-seven satrapies, from India to Ethiopia, even to those who are faithful to our interests. c Many who have been frequently honoured by the most abundant kindness of their benefactors have conceived ambitious designs, and not only endeavour to hurt our subjects, but moreover, not being able to bear prosperity, they also endeavour to plot against their own benefactors. d And they not only would utterly abolish gratitude from among men, but also, elated by the boastings of men who are strangers to all that is good, they suppose that they shall escape the sin-hating vengeance of the ever-seeing God. e And oftentimes evil exhortation has made partakers of the guilt of shedding innocent blood, and has involved in irremediable calamities, many of those who were appointed to offices of authority, who had been entrusted with the management of their friends' affairs; f while men, by the false sophistry of an evil disposition, have deceived the simple candour of the ruling powers. g And it is possible to see this, not so much from more ancient traditionary accounts, as it is immediately in your power to see it by examining what things have been wickedly perpetrated by the baseness of men unworthily holding power. h And it is right to take heed with regard to the future, that we may maintain the government in undisturbed peace for all men, i adopting needful changes, and ever judging those cases which come under our notice, with truly equitable decision. k For whereas Aman, a Macedonian, the son of Amadathes, in reality an alien from the blood of the Persians, and differing widely from our mild course of government, having been hospitably entertained by us, l obtained so large a share of our universal kindness, as to be called our father, and to continue the person next to the royal throne, reverenced of all; m he, however, overcome by the pride of his station, endeavoured to deprive us of our dominion, and our life; n having by various and subtle artifices demanded for destruction both Mardochæus our deliverer and perpetual benefactor, and Esther the blameless consort of our kingdom, with their whole nation. o For by these methods he thought, having surprised us in a defenceless state, to transfer the dominion of the Persians to the Macedonians. p But we find that the Jews, who have been consigned to destruction by the most abominable of men, are not malefactors, but living according to the justest laws, q and being the sons of the living God, the most high and mighty, who maintains the kingdom, to us as well as to our forefathers, in the most excellent order. r Ye will therefore do well in refusing to obey the letters sent by Aman the son of Amadathes, because he that has done these things, has been hanged with his whole family at the gates of Susa, Almighty God having swiftly returned to him a worthy recompence. s We enjoin you then, having openly published a copy of this letter in every place, to give the Jews permission to use their own lawful customs, and to strengthen them, that on the thirteenth of the twelfth month Adar, on the self-same day, they may defend themselves against those who attacked them in a time of affliction. t For in the place of the destruction of the chosen race, Almighty God has granted them this time of gladness. u Do ye therefore also, among your notable feasts, keep a distinct day with all festivity, that both now and hereafter it may be a day of deliverance to us and those who are well disposed toward the Persians, but to those that plotted against us a memorial of destruction. x And every city and province collectively, which shall not do accordingly, shall be consumed with vengeance by spear and fire: it shall be made not only inaccessible to men, but also most hateful to wild beasts and birds for ever.]

sve istoga dana u svim pokrajinama kraljevstva Ahasverova: trinaestog dana dvanaestoga mjeseca, to jest mjeseca Adara. 12a Prijepis toga pisma glasi: 12b ”Veliki kralj Ahasver namjesnicima u sto dvadeset i sedam pokrajina od Indije do Etiopije, upravljačima pokrajina i svima svojim vjernim podanicima, pozdrav!
